Project summary
2022 geopolitical tensions have demonstrated how some EU strategic sectors, such as the industry and agroindustry, are severely exposed to international disturbances in the energy market. These recent events have added pressure into the creation of a more resilient and independent EU energy market, starting by making these strategic sectors more self-sufficient and less dependent of the grid.
On 8 March 2022, the European Union proposed a plan to make Europe independent from Russian fuels. The REPowerEU concept seeks to diversify supplies, speed up the rollout of renewable, as well as boost energy saving and storage.
However, as a consequence of Russia's invasion, every EU region in 2022 has seen gas prices multiplied by 6, reaching 300 €/MWh, or oil reaching US$120. Rising energy prices boosted inflation, alongside supply bottlenecks, all which produced severe effects on industries, which even stopped production.
Now, the EU Parlament ("From sprint to marathon" Feb.2023) has shifted its focus from crisis-response mode to a long-term vision on energy security. This includes finding new supply of raw materials, promoting renewables, increased grid interconnections, and other policy measures to assure the energy independency of critical economic sectors.
Our industrial independency has to be built as a combination of factors which includes grid adaptation, renewable generation, fuel switch, energy storage and energy efficiency.
The PROJECT OBJECTIVE is to promote the ENERGY INDEPENDENCE OF INDUSTRIES energy independency of industries, especially in strategic sectors, assuring the energy self-sufficiency of factories and tertiary buildings, providing them with energy availability at any time and at an affordable price.
The partners bring 5 policies and plans, national, regional and local, in 5 different EU countries, which aim to analyse their policies and deliver improved measures to make their industrial sectors more energy independent and secure.
